A major concern of the state cueists seems to have solved with the initiation of Cue Sport Academy (CSA). The players who have been struggling to find a suitable place to play can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
The private academy made an inspiring start by hosting a worthwhile state-level snooker event yesterday.
‘‘CSA aims at providing regular training and coaching facilities to the state cueists and help them achieve success at National and international levels,’’ said academy president Priyanshu Sekhar Patnaik.
‘‘The tournament will be followed by a free coaching camp next month. We will try to rope in superior coaches, including Arvind Savur and Sanjay Sawant, to conduct camps for upper-level players,’’ further supplemented Patnaik.
‘‘Earlier we were playing at private clubs or commercial parlors. But for competitive play, we were facing inconvenience at both the places. Cue Sport Academy has thus come as an ideal place to conduct tournaments and prepare of National championships,’’ opined State champion Subrat Das.
President Patnaik, after witnessing the mass appeal by youngsters for the game, is confident about the success of the academy. He also made it clear that CSA would aim at the benefit of players than making profit.
The membership fee has initially been kept at Rs 1000 per member. “The money collected would be used for the management of the academy and also for further aid of the game” added Patnaik.
CSA has started with a modest facility of four tables in two air-conditioned rooms, measuring 2,200 square feet and is situated at Jayadev Vihar. It takes pride in possessing an English table, which is said to have been manufactured way back in 1820.
Another specialty is that the table was used in the World Billiards Championship when it was held here in 1996. The precious table gathered dust for years before the Billiards and Snooker Association of Orissa (BSAO) secretary Srimoy Kar took the initiative to hand it over to CSA for the benefit of the players.
