Four chess players and two rowers from Orissa will be getting a total of Rs 8.95 laks as cash awards from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India for winning medals in different international championships upto 2007.
They include Padmini Rout, Kiran Manisha Mohanty, Swayams Mishra, Utkal Ranjan Sahu (all chess) and Rohit Kumar Swain, Anil Kumar Mohanty (both rowing).
According to All India Chess Federation (AICF), Woman Intenational Masters (WIM) Padmini Rout and Kiran Manisha Mohanty will be the major beneficiaries, getting Rs 3.60 lakhs and Rs 3.30 lakhs respectively.
Rout’s achievements include gold medals in 2006 Asian Youth (u-12), 2006 Commonwealth (u-14), 2007 Commonwealth (u-14) championships: silver in 2007 Asian Junior championship: bronze in 2007 Asian Youth (u-16) championship and obtaining the WIM title.
Kiran Manisha Mohanty will be rewarded for winning gold in 2007 Commonwealth (u-18): silvers in 2006 Asian Junior, Commonwealth (u-18): bronzes in 2007 Asian Youth (u-18), Asian Junior championships and the WIM title.
Swayams Mishra has been sanctioned Rs 60,000 for being a member of the Indian under-16 team that won the gold medal in the 2007 World Youth Chess Championship at Singapur.
Utkal Ranjan Sahu will be richer by Rs 40,000 for bagging a silver medal in the 2006 Asian Youth (under-10 boys) Chess Championship at Teheran.
Among the two rowers, Swain will get Rs 40,000 for claiming two bronze medals in the 2007 Asian Junior Championship in Korea, while Mohanty will receive Rs 30,000 for securing one bronze in the same championship.
