19 May 2009

Asia medallist Sidhant Mohapatra and Puja Senapati won the boys` and girls` title respectively in the State Under-11 Chess Championship, which concluded at Ranihat High School in Cuttack today. In the eight-round boys’ event, last year`s Asia under-10 bronze medallist Sidhant and Chinmaya Routray (Bhubaneswar) tied for the top spot with 7.5 points each. Even progressive score failed to break the stalemate as both the boys secured 34.5 points. Sidhant eventually lifted the S C Bose Memorial Shield, the symbol of supremacy, by virtue of winning more games with black pieces. In the five-round girls’ competition, Puja emerged clear champion with 4.5 five points in her kitty. Smaraki Mohanty finished runner-up with four points. Top two finishers in both boys and girls categories qualified to represent Orissa in the National Under-11 Championship to be held at Shivamoga from July 9 to 18.
