  Chargers win IPL II
25 May 2009

Herschelle Gibbs scored an unbeaten half-century, while Pragyan Ojha claimed a three-wicket tow as Hyderabad Deccan Chargers won the second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), binding out Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final by six runs at Wanderers. Chargers, who had finished at the bottom in the inaugural season of the IPL last year, held their temperament together all through the match to chronicle a memorable win in front of a packed Wanderers` crowd. Defending a modest 143 for six, the Deccan Chargers were on the right track from the start and a cunning spell of bowling from Pragyan Ojha which accounted for three dismissals made the task difficult for the Royal Challengers. Earlier after electing to field first, Kumble slowed down the progress of Deccan Chargers with wickets at regular intervals and removed the danger-man Adam Gilchrist for a duck in the first over of the match. Kumble (4-16), taking a total of four wickets, was declared man of the match and Adam Gilchrist was declared man of the series. RP Singh, the leading wicket-taker of the tournament received the purple cap with a total tally of 23 wickets, while Mathew Hayden of Chennai Super Kings, the highest run-getter of the tournament (572) got the purple cap. Brief scores: Deccan Chargers: 143/6 in 20 overs (Gibbs 53, Symonds 33: Kumble 4-16) beat Bangalore Royal Challengers: 137/9 in 20 overs (Re van der Merwe 32: PP Ojha 3-28)
