  Six foreign GMs, 4 Indian IMs share lead

Six foreign Grandmasters and four Indian International Masters shared the lead with 4.5 points each after the completion of fifth round of the 1st SCS International Open GM Chess Tournament at hotel Swosti Plaza in Bhubaneswar today. Top seed GM Sergei Tiviakov (Netherlands) joined the leaders with a fluent win over IM Srinath Narayanan. Evgeny Vorobiov, Sergey Vokarev (both Russia) and Enamul Hossain (Bangladesh) are three other Grandmasters who also registered wins in the fifth round. Among Indian IMs, Deep Sengupta and K Rathnakaran secured full points to join the bunch of joint leaders. IMs MR Lalith Babu, SP Sethuraman also booked their places among the leaders with creditable draws against Grandmasters Igor Kurnosov (Russia) and Georgy Timoshenko (Ukraine) respectively.

 

Among Orissa players, IM Swayangsu Satyapragyan, Rajendra Kumar Sahu and Anwesh Upadhyaya advanced to the joint second place with victories over Nassir Wajih, Md Taibur Rahman and Mohammad Ashraf respectively. Orissa’s Woman International Master (WIM) Padmini Rout, however, suffered an upset when she was beaten by her junior state opponent Sunyasakta Satpathy. Overnight Orissa leader Biswajit Nayak also suffered defeat at the hands of K Rathnakaran.
