Santosh reigns supreme in state karate meet
20 Jul 2009

Santosh Moharana maintained his reputation as best karateka of Orissa by winning the title in the open fight category of the 22nd State Championship, which concluded at the Indoor Stadium in Puri yesterday. Around 350 karatekas from 22 districts vied for medals in the three-day meet. Bhubaneswar topped the medals tally with 12 golds, 11 silvers and 11 bronzes. Rourkela (5+5+5) and Puri (4+6+1) finished second and third with 15 and 11 medals respectively. All India Karate Federation (AIKF) president R Thiagarajan gave away the prizes at the closing function. Orissa State Karate-do Association (OSKA) secretary Hari Prasad Pattanayak was present on the occasion. Former Chennai Mayor Thiagarajan made it clear that Orissa State Karate-do Association was the AIKF recognised governing body of the state and advised karatekas not to associate themselves with any unrecognised body of the sport. Earlier, speaking in a media conference at Utkal Karate School in Bhubaneswar, the AIKF president expressed confidence that with its growing popularity, karate would become a mainstream sport in the country one day. He also announced that AIKF would sponsor the state’s leading karatekas for their participation in international meets.
