Renubala Mahanta won the first medal for Orissa in under-20 girls’ 100 metre event of the 9th Federation Cup Junior Athletics Championship, which commenced at Lucknow today. She finished third with a timing of 12.72 seconds. C Shilpa (Kerala) and Ranjana Roy (West Bengal) bagged the gold and silver, clocking 12.43 and 12.58 seconds respectively. Two more Orissa athletes swung into action on the opening day, but without success. In under-20 boys’ 1,500 metre run, Birsa Oram (4:06.13) and Bhaktu Soren (4:18.55) finished sixth and 12th respectively. Somra Oraon (Jharkhand) won the gold with a timing of three minutes 58.65 seconds.
