PROMISING Orissa sprinter Amiya Kumar Mallick suffered defeat in boys’ 200 metre heats of the 6th World Youth Athletics Championship at Bressanone in today.
The Bhubaneswar youth finished third among seven competitors in the third of a total of nine heats, clocking 22.25 seconds. Top two finishers in each heat, along with six fastest runners qualified for the semifinals. Spain’s Jose Antonio Vizuete emerged as the last fastest qualifier with a timing of 22.10 seconds.
Amiya’s performance was below than his recent timing of 21.89 seconds, which fetched him gold medal in the National Youth Athletics Championship at Madurai, six weeks ago. He had achieved his career best timing of 21.33 seconds at Pune, last October.
With the departing of Amiya, Orissa’s hope for a medal evaporated in the World meet. Earlier on Wednesday, Ranjita Mahanta, the other sprinter from the state, lost in girls’ 100 meter hits.
