Thomson Sahu of Prana Nath College (Khurda) edged past three opponents via progressive score to bag the title in the Utkal University Inter-College Chess Tournament, which concluded at MS Law College in Cuttack today. Progressive score was calculated after Thompson, runner-up Mahesh Prasad Sethi (SCS College, Puri), Gopanshu Meher (Christ College, Cuttack) and Subhankar Mishra (MS Law College) tied for the top position with six points each from seven rounds. The team championship was won by P G Vani Vihar. The top four along with fifth-placed Abinash Ranjan Nanda (PG Vani Vihar) qualified to represent Utkal in the North East Zone Inter-University Chess Championship to be held at Kolkata in the second week of November.
