Debasis Mohanty and Dhiraj Singh bowled well to help Orissa restrict hosts Gujarat to 237 for seven at the close of opening day of their Ranji Trophy (Group-A) Super League match at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad today.
Left-arm spinner Dhiraj bagged four wickets, including that of opposition skipper Parthiv Patel to put Orissa in a slightly advantagious position after Test discard Mohanty gave them an early break-through, castling J Desai in the first over of the match.
Gujarat, however, escaped a batting debacle thanks to Parthiv’s responsible knock of 83 (128 balls, 10x4) and his 89-run fifth-wicket partnership with R Bhatt (46). Later, A Makada strengthened the innings with a cameo unbeaten knock of 31, which included four sixes and one four.
