Birsa Munda Vidyapeeth (BMV), Rourkela won the girls title after a gap of four years, defeating their opponents from Jharkhand 1-0 in the final of the All-India Nehru Cup Junior Hockey Tournament at Gwalior today. Namita Toppo scored the all-important goal for the BMV team, which was composed of players from state government-run Panposh Sports Hostel (PSH).
The title triumph came as a natural justice for BMV’s tribal students, who were eliminated in the state level selection tournament held earlier at Sundargarh. Used to play on astro turf, the BMV girls crashed out as they could not adjust to the natural turf, which was used for the selection tournament.
Unfazed, the girls chose to participate in the all-India meet at their own cost and proved outcome of the state tournament wrong by emerging champions at Gwalior. PSH coach Amulya Nanda Bihari played instrumental role in the success by boosting the confidence of the girls. Incidentaly, Sundargarh Town High School, which won the state selection tournament, crashed out early in the all-India meet.
