Orissa skipper Shiv Sundar Das scored a much awaited century but failed to stop Tamil Nadu from taking a 34-run first innings lead on the penultimate day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Super League match at Veer Surendra Sai Stadium in Sambalpur today. Test discard Das made 119 (266 balls, 19x4, 1x6), his 24th century in first class cricket, and added 199 runs for the second wicket with Niranjan Behera to keep the home side in the hunt for the crucial first innings lead. Behera was unlucky to miss his century. His 95 came off 249 balls and included 16 hits to the fence. But the middle and lower order batsment failed to rise to occasion as Orissa were all out for 327, in reply to the visitors’ first innings total of 361. Tamil Nadu increased the lead to 96 by making 62 for no loss at the close of the day’s play.
