Uttar Pradesh women and Maharashtra men lifted the team titles in the 7th Senior National Soft Tennis Championship at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today. In the finals, UP women beat Delhi 2-1, while Maharashtra men got the better of Delhi by identical margin. Earlier in the women’s semifinals, UP defeated Madhya Pradesh 2-1, while Delhi prevailed over Chattisgarh 2-1. In the men’s last four round, Maharashtra and Delhi won over UP and Andhra Pradesh respectively by 2-0 identical margin. Host Orissa reached men’s quarterfinals before losing to Maharashtra 0-2. The five-day championship got off to a colourful start earlier yesterday with over 400 players from 22 states joining the fray. According to Mohammad Azam, general secretary of Orissa Soft Tennis Association, team events are being followed by individual events, featuring competition in singles, doubles and mixed doubles matches for both men and women.
