International medallist Sidhant Mahapatra and Subhasish Barik emerged champions in the 2nd All-Orissa Bhola Infratech Cup School Chess Tournament, which concluded at Rail Vihar Community Hall in Bhubaneswar today. In the 11-round tournament, organised jointly by Ama Parivar and S R Chess Centre, under the aegis of Khurda District Chess Association, Sidhant won the Group-B (Class 6 to 10) title, logging 10 points, while Subhasish claimed the Group-A (Up to Class 5) crown, scoring 11 points. The duo received a cash prize of Rs 5,000 each. Over 200 boys and girls from across the state took part in the four-day tournament, which carried a total prize fund of Rs 34,000. East Coast Railway Chief Passenger Traffic Manager Prashant Kumar Mohapatra gave away the trophies at the closing function.

The tournament turned out to be a successful commercial venture, generating good profit for the organizers. They collected around Rs 40,000 through entry fees (Rs 200 per player) and spent approximately the same amount in giving cash prizes and trophies. They profit they made came from sponsorship and advertisement revenue. Though the organizers did not disclose the amount of profit, sources believed it to be more than Rs 1 lakh. Besides, SR Chess Centre gained several new trainees for regular coaching on payment basis. Needless to say that, massive free publicity in the media helped them make such profit.
