Goa men and Manipur women emerged champions in the 24th Senior National Baseball Championship, which concluded at the Ravenshaw University ground in Cuttack today. Goa men, in fact, retained the title with a narrow 1-0 win over Delhi in the keenly-contested final. Host Orissa finished third, thrashing Andhra Pradesh 10-4. With this win, Orissa avenged their 7-8 defeat at the hands of Andhra in a pool league match earlier.
Goa’s hopes for a double crown went in vain as they lost to Manipur 1-2 in the women’s final. Last year’s champions Delhi finished third, defeating Orissa 5-4. Kailash (Goa) and Sweta (Delhi) were adjudged as the best male and female pitchers respectively. The prizes for best male and female catchers went to Asish Negi (Delhi) and Binu Sahoo (Orissa) respectively. Bijay Rana (Delhi) among men and Daina (Manipur) among women were named the best all-rounders.
Orissa Hihgh Court Justice Indrajeet Mohanty handed over the trophies at the closing function. State Sports Director Dr Prasant Kumar Pradhan, Ravenshaw University Registrar Dr Malay Mohanty, former Bar Council Chairman Dharanidhar Nayak, Cuttack Mayor Soumendra Ghosh, Amateur Baseball Federation of India secretary P C Bharadwaj, Baseball Association of Orissa secretary Sibananda Pradhan and Joint secretary Pruthiraj Sahoo were present on the occasion.
