Orissa Cricket Academy, set up near Barabati Stadium in Cuttack by Orissa Cricket Association, drew praise from National Cricket Academy (NCA) director Sandip Patil when he visited the one-year-old training and coaching centre yesterday.

‘‘BCCI has been providing 50 per cent financial assistance to all state cricket associations to set up their academies, where cricketeres can be groomed in a systematic manner. Orissa Cricket Academy is one of the best in the country,’’ opined Patil, a member of the 1983 World Cup winning Indian team. He also said that if the state associations desired, NCA would provide coach, physio and trainer to their academies.

Patil is on a nation-wide tour to visit cricket academies and assess the facilities available there. At present, 19 out of 27 academies are functioning in different states. Disclosing that BCCI was going to set up three special academies, the former India all-rounder said the three academies would come up at Mohali, Mumbai and Chennai.

After spending a few hours at the Cuttack-based academy, where he spoke to former India Test cricketers Shiv Sundar Das and Debasis Mohanty, Patil visited Barabati Stadium, which carries fond memories for him. When Barabati hosted an ODI for the first time on January 27, 1982, Patil put up impressive performance to help India beat England by five wickets and win the three-match series 2-1. He slammed a dashing 64 and followed it with two wickets to be adjudged the man of the match.

Twenty-eight years after playing his first and last match at Barabati, Patil was overwhelmed when saw the renovated version of the picturesqua stadium. Impressed by the facilities, he also took a few snaps of the modern dressing rooms, corporate boxes and conference hall.

Patil was greeted by Orissa Cricket Association secretary Asirbad Behera, who informed him about the functioning of the academy and the support staff associated with it. Speaking on the progress of the academy work, he said 75 per cent work had been completed in a year and remaining 25 per cent would be over within a short period.
