Orissa take lead for promotion of rackedlon in India
03 Jun 2010 BHUBANESWAR

Racketlon Federation of India (RFI) is aiming to set up the country`s first racketlon academy in Orissa in the next five to seven years. ``After hosting the first national championship earlier this year in Maharashtra, RFI`s next step is to find infrastructure facilities where all four sports (tennis, table tennis, badminton and squash) can be played. The long-term plan aims at building the country`s first racketlon academy, preferably in Orissa. However, the most difficult thing will be to find sponsors to build squash boxes,`` RFI executive president Manoranjan Mishra said today after returning from a 10-day trip to Europe (May 21 to 31).

``A short-term action for RFI is to establish of an Asian Racketlon Federation by helping registration of possible new federations in Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka. International Racketlon Federation (FIR) promised organisational and financial assistance for realisation of both short and long term goals,`` added Mishra, who participated in the International World Tour Event Vienna Classics and 24 Autohofe Champions Leauge (21-23 May), as well as the FIR seminar for country representatives during his Europe trip.

Also a badminton and gateball player, Mishra took part as a player in the Men`s amateur class of Vienna Classics, but was unable to win a match. He, however, graced the closing ceremony as a guest, gaving away the prizes together with Walter Danesits from the project India 2020. Mishra made the trip thanks to an invitation by Racketlon Federation Austria (RFA), which has chosen India as its developing partner in the FIR partnership programme.

According to Mishra, speaking at the international seminar in Vienna, which was attended by 15 representatives from 14 countries, FIR president Marcel Weigl appealed other richer European countries to follow RFA`s example and invite developing racketlon countries and arrange a partnership programme with them.

Winding his trip at Prague, Mishra took part in the doubles event of the Czech National Racketlon Championship in Prohunice with Czech Racketlon Association (CRA) resident Svatopluk Rejthar as his partner. CRA also promiedd to work together with India in the future, while Czech national team player Karolina Pechova showed Mishra the city.

Mishra promised FIR that RFI would try to find the first Indian national team ever to take part in the World Championships, the team event for which will be held in Austria from September 3 to 5 this year. ``The biggest problem for India once again is how to finance the trip for five players. We are hoping to find out sponsors for the venture,`` signed off Mishra.
