  Soumya emerges Senior State Chess Champion

Fide Master Soumya Ranjan Mishra (Bhubaneswar) won the title in the State Senior Championship, which concluded at Gangadhar Meher College here yesterday. In the 11-round championship, hosted by Koshal Chess Academy, Soumya topped the table with 9.5 points.

Cuttack teenager Mohammad Ashraf finished runner-up, while Rabindra Ojha and Rakesh Kumar Nayak occupied the third and fourth positions respectively. The top four finishers qualified to represent Orissa in the National `B` Championship to be held later this year. Jharsuguda MLA Naba Das gave away the prizes at the closing function.

Final standings (Top 20): 1. Soumya Ranjan Mishra (9.5), 2. Mohammad Ashraf, 3. Rabindra Ojha (9 each), 4. Rakesh Kumar Nayak (8.5), 5. Debasish Chakrabarty, 6. Manas Ranjan Parida, 7. P K Bihari, 8.
