Orissa`s Renubala Mahanta won a silver medal in women`s long jump event on the opening day of the 14th Asian Junior Athletics Championship at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi (Vietnam) on July 1.

Bhubaneswar Sports Hostel inmate Renubala finished second with a jump of 6.11 metres. With Ghule Sharda Bhaskar finishing third (6.5m) behind Renubala, India also claimed the bronze medal in the event.

Besides Renubala, two more Orissa athletes (Srabani Nanda and Rabi Das) represented the country in the four-day championship. Rabi Das, the second Indian entry in men`s long jump event, finished fifth with an effort of 7.21m.

Sravani Nanda claimed a silver as a member of the women`s 4x100m relay quartet with a time of 45.82 secs. Other three members of the team included Nirupama Sunderraj, Chinta G. Shanthi, Gayathry Govindaraj.
