  Bhubaneswar celebrates return of hockey

Hither to confined in Sundargarh district, HOCKEY, the most productive sport in Orissa, made a stylish return to the capital city with the commencement of the 2nd State-level six-a-side tournament at Kalinga Stadium here today.

Floodlight, smaller field, shorter game, plethora of goals and presence of several internationals combined to give the six-day tournament an glamorous look. Provision was also there for cheer girls to perform, but the idea did not work initially due to failure of music system.

East Coast Railway, Governemnt Sports Hostel (Panposh, Rourkela), SAIL Academy (Rourkela) and South Central Railway (Hyderabad) posted wins in four league matches of the opening day.

 

Subal Barla struck five times to power East Coast Railway to 13-0 win over Kalinga Institute of Social Science (KISS), while the sports hostel boys of Panposh rode on Arvind Barla’s five goals to trounce Orissa Police 6-1.

SAIL Academy humbled Government Sports Hostel (Sundargarh) 4-1 thanks to brace by man of the match Michael Barla. The railway side from Hyderabad, freaturing three Orissa internationals (Innocent Kullu, Manjit Kullu, Belsazer Harrow) got the better of SAG Centre, Sundargarh 7-0 in the last encounter of the day. Harrow scored twice to be named the man of the match.

 

The 10-team tournament, sponsored by Sea-shore Group and offerng a total cash prize of Rs 70,000 is being organised by Dilip Tirkey Sports Research and Development Foundation.
