  Mishra emerges State Open chess champion

Top seed and Fide Master Soumya Ranjan Mishra emerged champion in the Vedanta State Open Chess Championship, which concluded at Secretariat Recreation Club in Bhubaneswar today.

In the nine-round tournament, five players tied for the top spot with 7.5 points each. However, local favourite Mishra eventually claimed title and the top prize of Rs 6,000 on the basis of higher progressive score (42.5).

 

Second seed Krishan Soni finished runner-up with a progressive score of 41.5, while Rajendra Kumar Sahu occupied the third position. Cuttack ADM Dhiren Pattnaik and host Orissa State Chess Association president Kumar Haldar gave away the prizes at the closing function.

Final standings (Top 10): 1. Soumya Ranjan Mishra (7.5), 2. Krisnan Soni (7.5), 3. Rajendra Kumar Sahu (7.5), 4. Hrudananda Samantara (7.5), 5. Debasis Chakrabarty (7.5), 6. Mohammad Ashraf (7), 7. Bibhuti Bhusan Das (7), 8. Rabindra Kumar Ojha (7), 9. Ashutosh Mohapatra (7), 10. Rakesh Kumar Nayak (7).
