  SR beat ECoR to win all-India Railway volleyball title

Southern Railway, Chennai defeated host East Coast Railway in the exciting final by 3-2 sets to emerge champions in the 56th All-India Railway Volleyball Championship, which concluded at Rail Vihar ground here today. After losing the first two sets 23-25, 24-26, the Chennai side made a commanding comeback to win the next three sets 25-16,25-23, 15-9.

Earlier in the semifinals, Southern Railway beat Western Railway Mumbai by 3-1 sets (21-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-22), while East Coast Railway would meet Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi.

 

Orissa Governor Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare handed over the trophy at the closing ceremony. East Coast Railway General Manager Arvind Kumar Vohra, State Sports Secretary Parag Gupta, East Coast Railway Sports Association president D K Samantaray and general secretary Saroj Kant Patra were present on the occasion.

Altogether 22 men and women teams participated in the tournament, which commenced on November 19. The women teams played only exhibition matches.
This was the second time in five years that the championship was held in Bhubaneswar. Earlier in 2006, host East Coast Railway went on to win the title.
