  Queen`s Baton increases interest for CWG in Orissa

Queen’s Baton increased interest for the Delhi Commonwealth Games in Orissa with baton relay taking place in several places of the state including twin city Cuttack and Bhubaneswar today.

The Baton’s Orissa journey, accompanied by the QBR convoy, was accorded a grand reception at Jamsola border of Mayurbhanj district earlier yesterday. After relay and night halt at Baripada, the baton moved through Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack before reaching the state capital this evening.

 

Over 200 sportspersons of national and international repute, including hockey Olympian Dilip Tirkey, cycling Arjuna Awardee Minati Mohapatra and former India woman football captain Sradhanjali Samantaray carried the baton here. Eminent people from different fields, inluding ministers, legislators, bureaucrats and film stars also enjoyed the occasion as baton-bearers.

After ceremonial reception at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack and Kalinga Stadium here, cultural celebration was organised at Rabindra Mandap in the evening. The baton is scheduled to move to Puri and Konark before culminating its Orissa journey here tomorrow.

 

Orissa became be the 18th state to receive the Queen’s Baton, which entered India at Wagah border earlier on June 25. The historic relay would conclude its 240-day journey at Delhi on October 3, coinciding with the opening of the Commonwealth Games.
