Orissa finish 17th with 12 medals in 34th National Games

An 181-member Orissa squad, comprising 145 athletes finished 17th, bagging 12 medals in the 34th National Games, which was held at Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad in Jharkhand from February 12 to 26, 2011. The medals included five gold, four silver and three bronze. Swimmers Virdhawal Khade and Richa Mishra were adjudged the best male and female athletes while Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), who topped the charts with 162 medals including 70 gold, were given the Raja Bhalendra Trophy for Champions team in the 34th National Games that concluded today. A special award of best State was also given to Manipur who finished second with a haul of 48 gold, 37 silver and 33 bronze medals. Haryana occupied the third place with a total of 115 medals including 42 gold, 33 silver, 40 bronze.
Following are the performance report of the Orissa squad.
ATHLETICS: Subhasmita Rath finished eighth in women`s 20km walking and Dharmedhar Mahanta satisfied himself with fifth position in men`s 110m hurdles, clocking 14.68 seconds. Purnima Hembram finished sixth in women`s heptathlon with 4368 points. CANOEING-KAYAKING: Seem Dungdung bagged a silver in 1,000m K-I event and a bronze in 200m K-I event.

FOOTBALL (WOMEN): Orissa won the gold medal for the second time in a row, defeating formidable Manipur 2-1 in the final at JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur on Feb 19. Manipur again settled with the silver, while Bengal claimed the bronze, pipping Tamil Nadu 1-0. Orissa drew first blood in the 32nd minute through Pinky Bompal Magar, who chested down a Sasmita Mallick cross from the left flank and then bulged the net with a left-footer, giving no chance to Manipur custodian L Ronibala Chanu. After the change of ends, an opportunistic Jabamani Soren scored the second goal for Orissa in the 67th minute. Sasmita Mallick again did the spadework for the goal, sending down beautiful long-ranger from the right flank. Though the Manipur goalkeeper managed to fist out the goal-bound shot, an unmarked Soren gleefully flicked the ball into the open net. Manipur reduced the margin five minutes later through a penalty kick. Captain Sradhanjali Samantaray dedicated the success to the team and football lovers of Orissa. Sarita Jayanti Behera, who led Orissa to gold medal triumph in the previous National Games at Guwahati four years ago, achieved a rare double by being the coach of the team this time at Jamshedpur. Earlier in the semifinals, Orissa trounced Bengal 6-0 with Sasmita Mallick scoring a brace and Jabamani Soren, Pinky Bompal Magar, Jhili Munda and Thunki Munda contributing one goal each. In the Group-A league, Orissa won all three league matches, outplaying Tamil Nadu 3-1, Haryana 6-0 and host Jharkhand 8-0. Orissa scored a total of 25 goals in five matches and conceded only two. Sasmita Mallick emerged Orissa`s top scorer with 10 goals, which included a hat-trick each against Haryana and Jharkhand. Among other goal-getters, Pinky Bompal Magar netted five, Jhili Munda and Thunki Munda three each, Sradhanjali Samantaray and Jabamani Soren two each. Reward followed the Orissa team, which was felicitated by RSB Group later in the evening at Jamshedpur. Suvendra Kumar Behera, the Vice-chairman and Managing Director of the engineering and automotive component unit, greeted the players at his residence and gifted a cheque of Rs 1 lakh.
HOCKEY (MEN): Orissa finished last in the group league, losing to Maharashtra 1-2, to Delhi 0-3 and to Punjab 2-4. HOCKEY (WOMEN): Orissa finished fourth after losing to Madhya Pradesh 0-4. Earlier Orissa beat Maharashtra 3-0, beat Delhi 9-0, drew with MP 1-1 and qualified for semifinals, where they lost to Haryana 1-3.
KARATE: Bhubaneswar girl Valena Valentina fetched gold win women`s 50kg kata and silver in fight categories respectively.

ROWING: Pratima Puhana and Pramila Prava Minz won two gold medals in 500 and 1,000 metre coxless pair. Puhana went on to claim her third gold by helping Orissa win the 500 metre coxless four event. Other three rowers of the quartet were S Oleviya Devi, Sanjukta Dung Dung and Mamata Jena. A Amusana Devi and Manjula Xess secured a silver by finishing second in the 1,000m double scull. Another silver was claimed by the quartet of Mamata Jena, Pratima Puhana, Alma Lakra and S Oleviya Devi in 1000m coxless four.
RUGBY SEVENS: Orissa finished fourth.
