  Saina, Smaraki emerge champs in Asian School Chess

Saina Salonika and Smaraki Mohanty confirmed Orissa`s stature as an emerging power in Indian chess by winning gold medals in the 6th Asian Schools Chess Festival, which concluded at Colombo, Sri Lanka today.

Top seed Saina maintained her winning spree till the end to emerge champion in under-7 girls category, garnering full nine points, while Smaraki topped the table in under-13 girls category, logging eight points with seven wins and two draws. India asserted its supremacy in the eight-day competition, securing a total of 12 medals, which included five gold, three silver and four bronze.

 

INDIAN MEDAL WINNERS:

Under-7 Open:
LN Ram Aravind (Gold, 9 points).
Under-7 Girls: Saina Salonika (Gold, 9 points).
Under-9 Open: Aryan Chopra (Gold, 8 points) and Rajayan Kuvelkar (Bronze, 7 points).
Under-9 Girls: K Priyanka (Silver, 8 points) and A Harshini (Bronze, 6.5 points).
Under-11 Open: Ap V Karthik (Gold, 8 points) and Pranav Vijay (Silver, 7.5 points).
Under-11 Girls: CH Meghna (Silver, 7 points).
Under-13 Open: S Yogit (Bronze, 7 points).
Under-13 Girls: Smaraki Mohanty (Gold, 8 points) and CK Varsha (Bronze, 7.5 points).
