SAIL Hockey Academy, Panposh Sports Hostel triumph
24 Aug 2011 SUNDARGARH

SAIL Hockey Academy (Rourkela) boys and Panposh Sports Hostel girls emerged champions in the Tata Steel Hockey Tournament, which concluded here at the SAI centre today. SAIL Academy drubbed Panposh Sports Hostel in the lop-sided boys` final 3-0. Elosen Lakra opened the scoring in the 24th minute and added another goal eight minutes later. Micheal Barla completed the tally by scoring the third goal in 49th minute.

The girls team of the Panposh hostel wiped off the disappointment of their boys` team by prevailing over SAI-SAG Centre, Ranchi 4-2 in the final via tie-breaker. The match ended in 1-1 draw and in tie breaker Panposh girls scored three more goals while Ranchi girls could add only goal to their tally.

In the girls` final, the Panposh team took the lead in the 16th minute when Elita Barla converted the only short corner they received in the match. After conceding the goal, the resolute Ranchi girls made several forays into Panposh territory but their quest for the equaliser was foiled by the opposition defenders, particularly the custodian. The Ranchi side finally tasted success by converting their fourth penalty corner through Siluwaty Minjur in the 58th minute.

Panposh girls protested against this goal, claiming it was scored above shoulder height. Play was halted for four minutes but umpire did not relent. In the tie breaker, Panposh girls proved their superiority by converting three spot pushes into goals against Ranchi’s one.

Tata Steel, in association with Sundargarh district administration, organised the two day under-20 tournament, which featured eight boys` teams and four in girls` teams from Orissa and Jharkhand.

Hockey Olympians Michael Kindo, Dilip Tirkey, Lazrus Barla, William Xalxo and veteran hockey coach Sylvester Toppo were felicitated on the occasion. Former international athlete Charles Borromeo, now a Senior Manager (Sports) of Tata Steel, coordinated the tournament.

But the event created a few disappointments as the champion and runners-up teams did not get the prize money they had been promised by the host. Similarly, Olympians Kindo and Tirkey were presented with mementos, but Barla and Xalxo got badges only.
