  Police judokas emerge overall champions

All India Police Sports Control Board emerged overall champions in the Senior National Judo Championship, which concluded here at the Biju Patnaik Indoor Stadium in KIIT University today. Punjab finished runners-up in the two-day championship, which was hosted by Odisha State Judo Association (OSJA).

Tombi Devi of CRPF and Ashish Kumar Thakur of Services were adjudged best judokas in women`s and men`s categories respectively. Tombi Devi won the gold medal in 48kg weight category, while Ashish Thakur claimed the top honour in 60kg group. Altogether 511 judokas from 35 state and institutional units of Judo Federation of India participated in the championship, which was inaugurated by State Sports Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi.

 

JFI president Jagdish Tytler handed over the medals in the presence of JFI secretary Mukesh Kumar, KIIT founder Dr Achyuta Samanta, OSJA president Priyabrat Patnaik and secretary Gitanjali Panda. A 12-member Odisha squad failed to win any medal even though Amar Nayak, Biswajit Mahari, Gitanjali Sahoo and Manoj Kumar Panda put up modest performance, winning a bout or two. The four-day championship was earlier inaugurated by State Sports Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi.
