  Olga Girya wins KIIT Cup with IM norm

Russia WGM Girya Olga won the title with an IM norm in the AICF-KIIT Cup Category-13 International Women Chess Tournament that concluded at KIIT University campus here yesterday. Olga, a former European and World under-18 girls’ champion, drew her 11th and last game against WGM Guo Qi of China to finish with eight points and take home the top prize of USD 3,000.

Armenia IM Lilit Mkrtchian finished runner-up with 7.5 points, defeating German IM and top seed Elizabeth Paehtz from the black side of Smyslov variation of Caro Kan in the last round. Lilit became richer by USD 2,000 in the lucrative tournament that carried a total prize fund of Rs 9.20 lakhs. Qi occupied the third place in the final standings with six points. Elina Danielsen, the only Grandmaster in the tournament, outwitted Indian IM Nisha Mohota to claim the fourth place with six points.

 

Among the six Indian players, local star Padmini Rout was most successful, finishing fifth with six points. WGM Padmini won six games, drew six and lost the remaining three. WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty, the other Odisha player in the fray, finished last with three points.

Odisha Mining Corporation chairman Saswat Mishra handed over the trophy and prizes in the closing function today. KIIT Societies registrar Dr Sasmita Samanta, joint-resistrar Dr Sucheta Priyabadini, host All Odisha Chess Association president Sekhar Chandra Sahu, secretary Vivek Kumar Tibarewal and joint-secretary Manoj Kumar Panigrahi were present on the occasion.

FINAL STANDINGS: 1. Olga Girya (Rus, 8), 2. Lilit Mkrtchian (Arm, 7.5), 3. Guo Qi (Chn, 6), 4. Elina Danielsen (Arm, 6), 5. Padmini Rout (Ind, 6), 6. Foisor Cristina-Adela (Rum, 5.5), 7. Eesha Karavade (Ind, 5.5), 8. Elisabeth Paehtz (Ger, 5.5), 9. Mary Ann Gomes (Ind, 5), 10. Swathi Ghate (Ind, 4.5), 11. Nisha Mohota (Ind, 3.5), 12. Kiran Manisha Mohanty (Ind, 3).
