  Joketa, Salangabahal triumph in Rural Hockey Olympiad

Joketa (Nuagaon) men and Salangabahal (Kuanrmunda) women emerged champions in the first edition of the Sundargarh Rural Hockey Olympiad (SRHO), which concluded at the Biju Patnaik Hockey Stadium here today. In the roller-coaster men’s final, Joketa came from behind to beat Thopeberna (Rajgangpur) 7-6, via tie-breaker .
Theodar Samad, who converted two penalty corners for Joketa, was adjudged best player of the tournament.  The winners received a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and the trophy, while the runners-up got Rs 30,000 and a trophy.  Evan Dungdung, Joseph Lugun, Suleiman Dungdung, Dilip Lakra and Birat Tete were adjudged best defender, best goal-keeper, best centre-forward, best mid-fielder and top scorer respectively.

 

In the women’s final, Salangabahal beat Babudihi (Subdega) 5-2 to walk away with a cash prize of Rs 30,000. The runners-up team received Rs 20,000. Rourkela Steel Plant Chief Executive Officer GS Prasad accompanied by NIT-R Director Prof SK Sarangi, organising committee chairman Brahma Mishra and secretary Isdor Tirkey gave away the trophies and cash prizes in the closing function.
Hockey icon and chief patron of the event, Dilip Tirkey said the tournament aimed to give the raw rural talents a feel of competitive hockey and allow them to improve techniques and fitness. He admitted that the standard of the rural players was not at par with those getting specialised hockey training and said they can make a mark with proper guidance.
