05 Aug 2013 BHUBANESWAR

Team India, comprising four from Odisha, made history by winning the bronze medal for the first time in Women`s Junior Hockey World Cup yesterday. Led by Sushila Chanu, the 18-member Indian team achieved the glory by beating England 3-2, via penalty shoot out in the third-place match at Monchengladbach in Garmany.
Defending champions the Netherlands, who India lost to in the semifinals, retained the trophy by beating Argentina 4-2 in the final on penalties. India started their campaign on a disappointing note, losing to Australia 1-6 in the opening Pool-C match.

Unfazed, they bounced back to book berth in the quarterfinals, winning their remaining two pool matches 2-0 against New Zealand 2-0 and 10-1 against Russia. In the quarterfinals, India thrashed Spain 4-2.
The Odisha quartet included defenders Deep Grace Ekka and Namita Toppo; mid-fielders Lilima Minz and forward Anupa Barla. Among the four, Ekka is a product of SAI SAG Centre, Sundargarh, while the rest three belong to State government-run Sports Hostel, Panposh, Rourkela.
Rewards followed soon for the Indian girls as Hockey India announced a cash prize of Rs one lakh for each member of team and chief coach Hawgood. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also announced a cash award of Rs 1.25 lakh each for four players from the state.
