  Open National double for Dutee, Amiya strikes gold

Odisha athletes cornered glory, bagging three gold, one silver and one bronze medals for the state and ONGC in the 53rd National Open Athletics Championship, which concluded at Birsa Munda Athletic Stadium in Ranchi (Jharkhand) today. Among the seven athletes, Dutee Chand made a majestic impact in the four-day championship, bagging a sprint double.

Making her debut in the championship, 17-year-old Dutee completed the double winning both the 100m and 200m gold with a timing of 11.73 seconds and 24.02 seconds respectively. In the 200m, she erased the state record, which Srabani Nanda had achieved at Cuttack in 2011. Dutee capped her campaign with a bronze in 4x400m relay.

 

Bhubaneswar sprinter Kumar Mallick secured the other gold medal in men’s 200m, clocking 21.22 seconds. It was also Amiya’s debut in the Open Nationals and first gold medal in any senior nationa meet. In the process, he eclipled the the state record of 21.90 seconds, which he himself had set at Cuttack in 2012.

Purnima Hembram claimed the bronze in women’s heptathlon with 5108 points. She also bettered the state record which she had registered at Kolkatta in with 4953 points.

Rewards followed the the three medal-winning athletes with Odisha Olympic Association secretary Asirbad Behera announcing a total cash award of Rs 1.75 lakhs. Among the trio, Dutee will be richer by Rs 1 lakh, while Amiya and Purnima will receive Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively.

Altogether seven athletes from the state participated in the Ranchi Nationals. Among them, Dutee, Purnima and Jauna Murmu represented ONGC, while woman sprinter Srabani Nanda, discus thrower Parbati Sethi and male long jumper Rabi Das turned out for Odisha. Srabani, who is going through a lean period, finished fourth in both 100 and 200m sprints.
