  Chhattisgarh girls, Delhi boys emerge champs

Chhattisgarh women and Delhi men emerged champions in the 64th Junior National Basketball Championship, which concluded here at JN Indoor Stadium here today. Chhattisgarh eves retained the title, defeating Kerala 79-68 in the summit clash.
Poonam Chaturvedi, the tallest female cager of the country with a height of 6 ft 7 inches, starred in the Chhattisgarh victory, scoring 43 points. She also emerged the top scorer in the championship with a total of 321 points from in seven games.
In the hard-fought men`s final, Delhi overcame a spirited challenge of Punjab to win 89-82. Tamil Nadu boys and Maharashtra girls finished third, beating Kerala and Tamil Nadu respectively.
Justice Indrajit Mohanty of Odisha High Court handed over the trophies at the closing function. Basketball Federation of India president R S Gill, State I T Secretary Madhusudan Padhi, Tata Steel vice-president Arun Mishra and host Odisha Basketball Association secretary Ashok Kumar Sahu were present on the occasion. The eight-day championship, involving 23 boys and as many girls teams, was earlier inaugurated by Odisha Governor Dr S C Jamir.

 

Odisha boys made the state proud by finishing a creditable seventh, outplaying defending champions Chhattisgarh 89-76. This was the state`s best performance in the past 10 years of the championship. Guided by former India coach JP Singh, Odisha boys started their campaign on a winning note, trouncing Chandigarh 57-29. They next beat Jammu & Kashmir 66-35 to emerge toppers in Group-D.
After topping pool D, they qualified for the pre-quarterfinals by edging out West Bengal 102-97. They next lost to Haryana 72-93 in the but beat Maharashtra 84-70 in the pre-quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Odisha lost to Punjab 45-91.
But Odisha girls came a cropper in the championship, losing four matches in row before ending their campaign with a win. They lost to Madhya Pradesh 25-66, Maharashtra 17-69, Kerala 9-59 and Punjab 36-73. They registered their lone win, beating Delhi 44-41 in a relegation match.
Despited being prepared well under the guidance of former National coach Siba magon, the girls could not do well because they were clubbed in the upper leve (Pool B) with stronger teams.
National men’s head coach Scott Flemming and National women’s head coach Francisco Garcia (Spain) visited the championship to have a glimpse of the young talents.
OBA had worked out a tentative budget of Rs 57.30 lakhs for the hosting of championship. Major expenses included fooding for 50 teams Rs 20 lakhs, portable pole and board Rs 10 lakhs, electronic score boards Rs 8 lakhs and accommodation Rs 5 lakhs.
Odisha hosted a National basketball championship after a gap of nine years. Incidentally, the J N Indoor Stadium was the venue when Odisha played host to the 54th Senior National Basketball Championship from December 26, 2003 to January 2, 2004.
The 23rd Federation Cup was another major event, which OBA staged at Rourkela from October 28 to November 2, 2007.
