Satirtha bags double crown in Nalco Open
15 Dec 2013 BHUBANESWAR

Satirtha Patnaik overcame a punishing schedule and hazardous courts to bag a double in the 15th All-Odisha Nalco Open Tennis Tournament, which concluded at Kalinga Stadium here today. A successful dentist by profession, 35-year-old Satirtha played 12 matches in two days before winning his two titles in men`s singles and open doubles categories.
He slipped and fell badly, bruising his hand and leg on the dangerous courts, but was lucky to escape a major injury to win his singles final against friend-and-foe Ajay Nishank. The duo earlier grabbed the doubles crown, defeating Santosh Mallik and Vivek Tibarewal in the final.
Local school students Alisha Samal, Avilash Mishra and Kabir Hans emerged singes champions in women`s, under-16 and under-12 boys` categories respectively. Footballer-turned-tennis-player Biranchi Narayan Mohanty also claimed a double by winning titles in 45-plus and 55-plus veteran doubles events.

State Police DG Prakash Mishra, Sports Secretary Saswat Mishra and Nalco CMD Ansuman Das gave away the prizes at the closing function.
Organised by Bhubaneswar District Tennis Association, the three-day tournament, featuring around 250 players, started on a bozzare note as leading players used black ribbon on their T-shirts to protest against the inordinate delay in converting the four hard courts at the stadium in to synthetic.
But they dropped the idea after Saswat Mishra, the new secretary of the Sports & Youth Services Department announced to complete the work (wall-to-wall synthetising of the four courts) within a month.
Host BDTA also put pressure on the players, threatening to disqualify them if they play with black ribbon. However, Chinmay Pradhan, the No 1 male player of the state and leader of the protest movement, chose to boycott the tournament.
Playing conditions of the tournament, clamed to be the biggest domestic event of the state, also drew flak for BDTA. Matches were cut short and even some final matches were played on game-basis instead of sets. Sand and dust in the baseline areas caused injuries to many players. Simply sweeping or watering the dust out would have avoided such risks, but the organizers did not pay attention to the issue.
