  Satirtha, Ajay clinch Odisha Open double crowns

Experienced local campaigners Satirtha Patnaik and Ajay Kumar Nishank asserted supremacy in the 7th Odisha Open Tennis Tournament, bagging a double each here at the Bhubaneswar Club courts today. The duo first won the men`s open doubles title, defeating city opponents Santosh Kumar Mallik and Adwithiya Patnaik 6-3, 6-4 in the well-contested final.

Patnaik, a dentist by profession, completed the double by emerging men`s singles champion with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over top seed Santosh Mallik. This was the first Odisha Open singles title for Patnaik, who received the newly instituted Sandeep Mohapatra Memorial Trophy and a cash prize of Rs 10,000. Runner-up Mallik, a qualified coach, became richer by Rs 5,000.

 

Nishank, also a leading coach, clinched his double by grabbing the mixed doubles title in association with Shilpi Swarupa Das, who is a trainee of Bangalore-based Mahesh Bhupati Academy. In the final, they got the better of Asutosh Das and Alisha Samal 7-5, 6-1.

Bhubaneswar made a clean sweep of all the six titles with senior men claiming the remaining three. Rabindra Nath Senapati and Rajpal Singh pocketed the 40-plus doubles title, defeating Saswat Jena and Bandhu Mohanty 9-6.

The 50-plus doubles crown went to Biranchi Narayan Mohanty and Ajay Mohapatra who prevailed over P K Bakshi and S S Rath 8-4. V Raman and Mansingh Ho emerged champions in 60-plus doubles category, getting the better of Arun Barla and Anar Mohanty 8-4.

The title winners in all the categories except men`s singles, received Rs 6,000 each, while the runners-up were given Rs 3,000 each. State Development Commissioner Injeti Srinivasa handed over the trophies and cash prizes the closing function.

Host Khurda District Tennis Association president Madhusudan Padhi, secretary Asit Pradhan, patron Prasant Kumar Mishra and Odisha Tennis Association vice-president Brahmananda Mishra were present on the occasion.
