  Naveen launches IDCO-MCL Kalinga Lancers

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today formally launched `IDCO-MCL Kalinga Lancers`, the sixth franchisee of the 2nd Hockey India League (HIL), scheduled to be conducted at different venues next year from January 23 to February 23. He also unveiled the logo and jersey of the Odisha-based team.

Speaking on the occasion, the CM said: ``I consider this to be a significant development in the promotion of field hockey in Odisha as it would provide a highly visible and attractive platform to inspire young talented hockey players in the state to take to competitive hockey. It would also promote Bhubaneswar as popular destination for hosting major national and international hockey events.``

 

The launching of the new franchisee was preceded by the signing of an agreement between Odisha Sport Development and Promotion Company (OSDPC), the promoter of IDCO-MCL Kalinga Lancers and Hockey India League.

State Sports and Youth Services Director DV Swamy, who is also the chairman of the OSDPC, and HIL CEO Elina Norman signed the Memorandum of Understanding in the presence of the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra, Development Commissioner I Srinivas, Hockey India General Secretary Narinder Batra and vice-president Pratap Satapathy here at the State Secretariat.

According to government authorities, state-owned Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation of Odisha (IDCO) and Coal India subsidiary, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) have joined hands to promote the OSPDC, a non-for-profit company, under Section-25 of Indian Companies Act.

The company will be functioning at Kalinga Stadium Sports Complex here. Kalinga Stadum, which boasts of synthetic hockey surface confirming to the international specifications will be the venue for the league matches of Hero Hockey India League -2014.

Hockey Olympian and Padmashree Dillip Tirkey is the mentor and adviser to the SPV. Out of the 34 matches, six league matches would be played at the Kalinga Stadium.

``Hockey India has also chosen Kalinga Stadium Hockey Complex as the venue for hosting the next Champions Trophy in 2015 and the Junior World Cup Junior in 2016, besides placing Bhubaneswar as the first preferred location in the bid for men’s World Cup in 2018,`` the Chief Minister said.
