Celebrity Cricket League held at Barabati Stadium
08 Feb 2014 CUTTACK

Barabati Stadium, the international cricket venue here, witnessed a different kind of star war with the taking place of two matches of the 4th edition of the Celebrity Cricket League (CCL) today. A large crowd turned up to witness the floodlit matches, which provided them loads of entertainment and exicing contest.
Mumbai Heroes’ quest for their first win in the eight-team tournament finally bore fruit when they beat hosts Bengal Tigers by 72 runs. This was the first win in three matches for the Heroes and they opened their account with two points.A miserly five-wicket haul by Adarsh and a half-century by Raghu helped Telugu Warriors beat joint table-toppers Bhojpuri Dabanggs by two wickets in another match of the day. This was the second win for Warriors and they joined Dabanggs and Karala Strikers at the top of the table with four points from three outings.

Mumbai Heroes’ stand-in skipper Aftab Shivdasani and Bobby Deol played instrumental roles in handing out the Tigers their third defeat in a row at the latter’s home ground. Electing to bat, Mumbai Heroes rode on a breezy 43 by Shivdasani and his 61-run partnership for the second wicket with Raja Bherwani to compile a healthy total of 172 for eight. In reply, Bengal Tiger were restricted to 100 for nine.
Shivdasani, who led Heroes in the absence of original skipper Suniel Shetty, played like an accomplished batsman, hitting three fours and as many sixes in his 34-ball knock. His pulls and lofted shots over the bowlers’ head were a treat to watch. Indrasish was most successful bowler for the home team, bagging five wickets for 39 runs.
Chasing the stiff target, Bengal Tigers suffered a top-order failure as they were reduced to 27 for four. Though opener Joy (33 off 30) batted confidently at one end, wickets continued to tumble in regular intervals at the other. Tigers could muster a three-figure total thanks to an unbeaten 33 by Sandy. Among the Heroes’ bowlers, medium pacer Bobby Deol and V Badola scalped three wickets apiece.
Bengal Tigers owner Bunny Kapur and his wife Sridevi arrived at the stadium towards the end of Mumbai Heroes Innings. Siddhant Mohapatra was the only star from Odisha film industry to draw attention in the show. Also a Lok Sabha Member, Mohapatra was seen having an animated chat with Hollywood star Sohail Khan. Actress Huma Qureshi added attraction to the occasion.
Odisha Cricket Association secretary Asirbad Behera and other office-bearers of the state body provided full cooperation for the successful staging of the CCL maches.
