  Sub-junior powerlifters bag 9 National medals

A seven-member Odisha squad bagged a total of nine medals in the Sub-junior National Powerlifting Championship, held at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu from June 2 to 6. The medals included five gold and two silver in unequipped category and one gold and one bronze in equipped category.

In the unequipped category, Droupadi Singh and Debi Singh claimed a gold each girls` 43kg and 52kg respectively, while the other three yellow metals were grabbed by Bidyadhar Singh, Sumit Kumar Sahu and Sangram Behera in boys` 59kg, 66kg and 83kg categories respectively.

 

Droupadi lifted 80kg in squat, 40kg in benchpress and 102.5kg in deadlift for a total of 225.5kg. Debi`s efforts included 97.5kg in squat, 57.5kg in benchpress and 140kg in deadlift for a total of 295kg. Bidyadhar (157.5+97.5+195), Sumit (165+95+207.5) and Sangram (180+100+197.5) finished on top with total lifts of 450kg, 467.5kg and 477.5kg respectively.

The two silver medals were secured by Laxmimani Singh (75+45+120 = 240kg) in girls` 47kg and Bikram Behera (140+97.5+197.5 = 435kg) in boys` 66kg categories.

In the equipped category, Debi Singh was adjudged the strongest girl of India after she won the gold medal in the 52kg category, lifting 110kg in squat, 57.5kg in benchpress and 137.5kg in deadlift for a total of 305kg. Sumit Kumar Sahoo secured a bronze in boys` 66kg equipped category with efforts of 175kg in squat, 97.5kg in benchpress, 137.5kg in deadlift for a total of 482.5kg.
