Odisha’s ace woman sprinter Dutee Chand achieved the biggest success of her career by winning two gold medals within a short period of one and a half hours on the last day of the 16th Asian Junior Athletics Championships at Taipei City today.

Leading the 34-member Indian squad, Dutee first emerged champion in 200 meter sprint with an impressive timing of 23.74 seconds and then clinched the double by helping India win the title in 4x400 meter relay. The Indian quartet with VV Jisha, Jessy Joseph and Vijaya Kumari as the other three members clocked three minutes 40.53 seconds.

Dutee clocked a much impressive 23.57 secs while winning her qualifying 200m heats that shattered Pandeswari`s 16-year-old national junior record of 23.95 secs as well as Vinitha Tripathi`s Indian junior best time of 23.59 secs registered during the SAF Games.

She would have made it a golden treble but missed the opportunity as the Indian squad arrived late in Taipei City due to visa problem. Indian athletes, including Dutee missed the Day-one events of he three-day championship.

India finished fifth overall in the championship, bagging a total of 12 medals, which included two gold, five silver and five bronze. China finished on top in the medals tally with 12 gold, 10 silver and two bronze followed by Japan (11, 5, 5), Qatar (6, 2, 1) and hosts Chinese Taipei (4, 3, 8).

Odisha Olympic and Athletic Association association secretary Asirbad Behera congratulated Dutee for her sensational achievements and declared cash award of Rs one lakh for the young sprinter from Jajpur district.

This was the second international success for Dutee, who had secured a bronze on her debut in the 200 meter event of the 20th Asian Athletics Championship at Pune in July 2013.
