  Aravind, Lakshmi win National under-11 chess titles

Fide Master L N Ram Aravind and Woman Fide Master Chidambaram Lakshmi clinched a double crown for Tamil Nadu by winning the open and girls’ titles respectively in the 28th National Under-11 Chess Championship here at hotel Rumani today.

Top seed Aravind, who was shocked in the 10th round by West Bengal Candidate Master Aronyak Ghosh earlier on Thursday, drew his last-round duel against Arjun Erigaisi (Telengana) to retain the title with 9.5 points.

This was the fourth National title for Aravind, who had claimed his earlier two in the under-7 and under-9 championships. A student of Chennai-based Chess Gurukul, Aravind dedicated the latest crown to his coach Grandmaster R B Ramesh.

 

Giant-killer Aronyak finished runner-up with nine points after settling for a draw in the final round against Nihal Sarin (Kerala), who occupied the third position with 8.5 points.

Girls’ second seed Lakshmi, who went for the final game with one point lead, held Arushi Kotwal (J&K) to a draw to confirm her title triumph. Maharashtra lass Mrudul Dehankar registered a last-round win over Mounika Akshaya Bommini (AP) to finish runner-up with nine points. Top seed and home favourite Saina Salonika settled with the third position after she was forced to a draw by WFM Divya Deshmukh (Maharashtra).

Altogether 272 youngsters, including 99 girls, participated in the nine-day championship, which was organised in a grand manner by Puri Club, in association with District Chess Association of Puri (DCAP), under the aegis of All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA).

Title winners in both categories received cash prizes of Rs 20,000 each, while players finishing second and third became richer by Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. The top three finishers qualified to represent India in next year’s World and Asian Under-12 Championships.

Odisha Health Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak handed over the trophies at the closing function. Union Bank of India DGM VijayKumar Srivastava, AOCA secretary Vivek Kumar Tibarewal, joint-secretary Manoj Kumar Panigrahi, Puri Club secretary Raj Kishore Patra and DCAP vice-president Pradyumna Mishra were present on the occasion as guests.
