Championship Series double crown for Avilash Mishra
19 May 2014 BHUBANESWAR

Local favourite Avilash Mishra added yet another double crown to his trophy cabinet by winning both the boys` singles and doubles titles in the OTPPA-OTA All-India Under-16 Championship Series Tennis Tournament here at Kalinga Stadium today.
Top seed Avilash won both his singles semifinal and final with consummate ease, trouncing seventh seed Abdul Kareem Khan and second seed Aynampudi K Rohit (AP) respectively. A trainee of Bhubaneswar-based S S Tennis Academy, Avilash accomplished the double by securing the doubles title with Rohit as partner. The Odisha-AP duo outplayed their all-Odisha pair of Mahesh Mohapatra and Kabir Hans in the final in straight sets.
This was the 10th time that Avilash, a Standard-X student of Sai International School, pocketed a double crown in AITA junior circuit tournaments. In his five-year-long career, he has gathered a total of 25 titles so far.

West Bengal`s Yubrani Banerjee cornered glory in girls` category, emerging singles champion and finishing doubles runners-up with Odisha partner Koyal Mishra. Top seed Yubrani overcame a sluggish start to beat unseeded local opponent Kalaga Bhargavi 6-4, 6-0 in the singles final.
Earlier in the semifinals, Yubrani, a pupil of former India Davis Cup coach Enrico Piperno, thrashed Koyal Mishra 6-2, 6-1, while Bhargavi got the better of Sahaja Yamalapali (AP) 6-4, 6-2.
Local combination of Alisha Samal and Rutuparna Choudhury claimed the girls` doubles title, defeating Yubrani and Koyal in the hard-fought final, 4-0, 2-4, 7-5.
Daughter of Arvind Banerjee, former captain of Services Santosh Trophy team, Yubrani, however, could not recollect the number of AITA titles she had garnered so far. ``It`s around 40. I have forgotten the exact number. But this is the second time that won a title in Bhubaneswar,`` said petite Yubrani, a Standard-X student of St Peter`s School, Kolkata.
Title winners of the three-day tournament gained 25 AITA ranking points each, while the losing finalists secured 20 points apiece. Host Odisha Tennis Players` Parents` Association president Pramod Kumar Patnaik handed over the trophies at the closing function.
Many new talents from Odisha came to limelight, putting up impressive performance in this tournament. K Bhargavi, whose father is a south Indian and mother an Odia, was one among them. Taking to tennis just a year ago, she has improved a lot by training at SS Tennis Academy.
Local lass Komal Vishakha was another player to catch attention. Returning to competitive tennis after a gap of 18 months, she caused a major upset by eliminating second seed Monica Kumar (WB) in the first round. She reached quarterfinals before losing to Bhargavi.
