  Sundargarh win Nalco Cup State Hockey Championship

Star-studded Sundargarh won the title in the 12th Nalco Cup State Hockey Championship, scripting a 2-0 win over East Coast Railway in the floodlit final at Barabati Stadium here today. Defending champions Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) finished third, edging out Paradeep Port Trust (PPT) 3-2 in the hard-fought hard-line match earlier in the day.

Earlier in the semifinals, East Coast Railway caused a major upset by beating
Rourkela Steel Plant 1-0, while Sundargarh prevailed over Paradeep Port Trust 1-0. Altogether 20 teams participated in the championship, which commenced earlier on May 17.

State Sports Secretary Saswat Mishra handed over the trophy in the closing function. Nalco Director (HR) S C Padhy, CRPR (Bhubaneswar) IG Brigu Srinivasan, Odisha Olympic Association secretary Asirbad Behera, host Hockey Odisha president Justice (Retd) A S Naidu and general secretary Pratap Satpathy were present on the occasion.

MAY 17:
Match No 1: Paradip Port Trust
(Prem Sanjay Ekka 4, Nilesh Mahji 2, Santosh Mahji 1) beat Central Reserve Police Force (Bhubaneswar) 7-0.
MAY 18:

Match No 2:
Deogarh (Jyoti Lakra, 35th, 42nd, 46th; Ibrahim Ekka 25th, 28th; Ruben Ekka 4th, Salman Lakra 49th, Rabi Kujur 54th, Raju Barla 57th, Benedict Minz 58th) beat Dhenkanal (Rajesh Behera 5th) 10-1.
Match No 3: Ganjam (Generic Barua 55th, 66th) beat Nalco 2-0.
Match No 4:
Jagatsinghpur (Deepak Bahala 9th, 69th; Beg Tirkey 49th, Rahil Barla 58th) beat Phulbani (Krishna Tirkey 7th, Sajit Kujur 17th) 4-2.
MAY 20:
Match No 5: Sambalpur
(Bhimsen Oram 2, P Tete 1) beat KIIT 3-0.
Match No 6: Sundargarh beat Khurda 10-0.
Match No 7 (QF 1): Paradeep Port Trust (Roshan Lakra, D Anthony Kiro, Roshan Kiro) beat Ganjam (S Minz, Sanjay Surin) 3-2 in tie-breaker (FT: 1-1).
May 21:
Match No 8: Cuttack
(Ashutosh Panda 4) beat Bargarh 14-0.
Match No 9: East Coast Railway (Binay Kujur 3) beat Sambalpur 9-2.
Match No 10: Rourkela Steel Plant beat Bolangir 7-2.
May 22:
Match No 11 (QF 2): Sundargarh (Mathias Minz 4; Arbin Barla 2; Bipin Tirkey, Theophil Kujur, Prasant Tirkey) beat Jagatsinghpur 9-0.
Match No 12 (QF 3):
East Coast Railway
(Dillip Kerketta 2; Suresh Toppo, Anand Tirkey, Sunil Toppo, Sanjit Kujur 1 each) beat Cuttack (Pratap Nayak, Paban Mallick, Asish Bux) 6-3.
Match No 13 (QF 4): Rourkela Steel Plant (Ijub Ekka, Dillip Toppo, Felix Baa, Aslem Lakra, Devid Dung Dung) beat Angul (Santosh Lakra, Amrit Lakra, Ranjan Barla, Ranjan Lakra) 5-4 in tie-breaker (FT 3-3).
