Indian hockey team arrives for Champions Trophy
27 Nov 2014 BHUBANESWAR

Team India, led by Sardara Singh, landed in Temple City Bhubaneswar today with a mission to win the title for the first time in the Men`s Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament, the 35th edition of which is set to be held here at Kalinga Stadium from December 6 to 14.

``Champions Trophy is the last major international hockey event of the year, during which we have done well, winning the Asian Games gold and the Test series in Australia. We are keen to end the year with a hat-trick of titles by adding the maiden Champions Trophy crown,`` said Sardara at the Biju Patnaiki International Airport here.

Sardara was of the opinion that consistency would be big advantage for India to win the Champions Trophy. ``We have been following a game-plan, which has fetched us good results. We will continue with the same strategy and hope that it will work well in the Champions Trophy,`` said Sardara.

Asked about the missing of the guidance of former coach Terry Walsh, who formulated the new strategy, Sardara said the team is following a strategy not any individual. ``Rolet Oltmans has been with us for a long time and he has guided us as well as Terry Walsh. We have learned a lot from both of them. Now we want to execute their plans and win the Champions Trophy,`` signed off Sardara.

Meanwhile, the State Government, which has made special efforts to promote hockey in the state, worked with urgency to complete the infrastructure work for the mega event. ``The laying of the synthetic practice turf, which was the last facility required for the Champions Trophy, has been completed. Providing lights to the practice field will be completed in a couple of days,`` said Kalinga Stadium in-charge Barija Mohanty.

India will play their first match of the eight-nation tournament against Germany on December 6. Other six teams in the fray include defending champions Australia, Netherlands, Pakistan, England, Belgium and Argentina.
