Odisha win 15 medals in 35th National Games
14 Feb 2015 BHUBANESWAR

Odisha ended its campaign with a total of 15 medals in the 35th National Games in Kerala today. A 158-member Odisha squad occupied 16th position in the final tally, pocketing six gold, five silver and four bronze medals in the fort-night-long meet.

Athletes claimed two gold, one silver and three bronze medals; rowers secured two gold and two silver medals; weightlifters pocketed one gold and one bronze, women rugby team picked one gold, women football team won one silver and men hockey team bagged one silver.

Beleagured woman sprinter Dutee Chand claimed the gold in women`s 100m sprint, rewriting the meet record for the third time in the process. She also claimed two bronze medals, finishing third in women’s 4x100m relay and 200m sprint.

Sarita Singh Choudhury came from nowhere to win the women`s hammer throw gold with an effort of 56.47m. Though not in the original 158-member state squad, Railway athlete Sarita sneaked in unnoticed to spring a surprise by delivering the gold at Thiruananthapuram. But on the other hand, Bhubaneswar girl Urja Bhuyan, who won the women hammer title with a meet record in the State Athletics Championship, was not selected for the National Games.

Women rowers Sanjukta Dung Dung and Manjula Xess fetched two gold medals, winning the 2000m and 500m coxless pair events, while woman weightlifter Minati Sethi grabbed the gold in 58kg weight category.

The overall performance proved to be slightly better than the previous edition of the National Games in Jharkhand, where Odisha had finished 17th, winning 12 medals, which included five gold, four silver and three bronze.

Odisha Olympic Association congratulated medal winners and announced cash awards in Cuttack. According to the announcement by OOA secretary Asirbad Behera, gold medal winners will be given Rs 1 lakh each. Silver and bronze medallists will be richer by Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 each.

Football Association of Odisha secretary Sanjay Behera congratulated the state women team for finishing runners-up and announced cash reward of  Rs 1.25 lakh for the members of the team, including coach, manager and support staff.

While some sportspersons from other states or organizations won medals for Odisha, some sportspersons from Odisha did so for other states or organizations. For instance as many as nine players from Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) were parts of the Odisha men hockey team that secured silver medal. At the same time Odisha Olympian Ignace Tirkey led Services men hockey team to gold medal triumph.

Odisha gymnast Rakesh Kumar Patra, who represented Services, collected four gold medals in men’s team event, individual all-round event, horizontal bars and roman rings. Similarly, Bijay Kumar Rout of Odisha won a silver medal for Manipur in sailing.
