  Smaraki retains State women chess crown

Padmini Rout and Kiran Manisha Mohanty may be the women chess stars of Odisha, but when it comes to the state`s domestic competitions, Kendrapara`s Smaraki Mohanty has been ruling the roost for the past four years, winning titles in different categories.

Student of Bhubaneswar-based KIIT University, Smaraki added yet another feather to her cap by retaining the title in the Nalinikanta Mohanty Memorial FIDE Rating State Women Chess Championship, which concluded at D S Law College in Kendrapara today.

In fact, 17-year-old Smaraki bagged the women`s crown for the third time in five years as she won all of her six games to finish at the top of the table with full six points. Top seed Smaraki`s victims included Sarita Behera, Gitashree Biswal, Akankhya Kabi, Shreejita Khuntia, WFM Rutumbara Bidhar and Krushna Mishra.

 

Third seed Rutumbara of Khurda settled as runner-up with five points. Rajnagar MLA Anshuman Mohanty handed over the prizes in the presence of host Kendrapara District Chess Association secretary Bhabesh Mohanty.

Top four finishers in the three-day championship qualified to represent Odisha in the 42nd National Women Challenger Championship, scheduled to be held at Uttan Bhayandar in Maharashtra from July 2 to 11.

FINAL STANDINGS (Top 10): 1. Smaraki Mohanty (6), 2. Bidhar Rutumbara (5), 3. Akankhya Kabi (4.5), 4. Anoushkaa    w Mohanty (4.5), 5. Krushna Mishra (4), 6. Gitashree Biswal (4), 7. Sunyasakta Satpathy (4), 8. Sonali Mishra (3.5), 9. Shreejita Khuntia (3), 10. Suhana Jena (3).
