  Talent Series titles for Aditya, Abhishek and Rutuparna

Host Odisha achieved a hat-trick by making a clean sweep of all three singles titles in the AITA-OTA Talent Series Tennis Tournament, which concluded here at Kalinga Stadium today. Aditya Satpathy and Abhishek Mohapatra capped the treble by adding the under-16 and under-12 boys titles to the under-16 girls crown, which was bagged by Rutuparna Choudhury earlier yesterday.

Top seed Aditya proved himself too good in the all-Odisha under-16 final as he cantered past second seed Amrutjay Mohanty 6-3, 6-2. Unable to put a good fight, Amrutjay committed a lot of unforced errors before accepting defeat. The match witnessed an unpleasant happening in the second set as Amrutjay abused the ball and walked off the court in frustration.
 

But the under-12 final turned out to be a thrilling contest with second seed D Aryan Swamy giving top seed and Odisha statemate Abhishek Mohapatra a good run for his money. Hitting the ball with more power and spin, Abhishek took the first set 6-3. But he could not carry on his domination for long and lost the second set 3-6 by playing casual shots at crucial moments.

On the other hand Aryan was more consistent and his patience helped him take the match to the wire. However, Abhishek came to his elements when it mattered most and wrapped up the match, taking the third set 7-6 via tie-breaker (7-4). Though rain interrupted the match three times, it could not dampen the enthusiasm of the two youngsters. Abhishek even experienced a close shave as he slipped on the court and and fell backward.

Top seed Rutuparna Choudhury won the under-16 girls singles title, defeating her understudy Ameek Kiran Batth 6-3, 6-1 in the final, which was also an all-Odisha affair. This was the 10th AITA singles title and 17th overall for local girl Rutuparna, who is a protege of leading coach Farhan Ali.

Altogether 70 players from Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha participated in the tournament, which was organised by Odisha Tennis Association (OTA). Jatin Batsya conducting matches as tournament referee.
