India sweep hockey test series against Japan
09 May 2015 BHUBANESWAR

Disappointing start, but a dazzling finish. That was the bottom-line of the four-match men’s hockey test series as hosts India mauled Japan 4-0 in the last game to clinch a 3-0 triumph here at Kalinga Stadium Hockey Complex today.

The series victory, preceded by the bronze medal in the Sultan Azlan Shah Tournament in Malaysia, is sure to boost the morale of captain Sardar Singh & Co for the FIH World League Semifinals at Antwerp, Belgium, where India will battle it out with nine other countries, including Australia, Pakistan and England from June 20 to July 5.

Young forward Akashdeep Singh starred in final test, scoring a brace, while V R Raghunath and Dharamvir Singh contributed one goal each. The hosts started the series with a lackluster 1-1 draw, but showing marked improvement thereafter, they won the next two 2-0 and 2-1. India scored a total of nine goals in the series, while conceding just two.

During the series two Indian players completed 100 international matches. Odisha defender Birendra Lakra and Kothajit Singh achieved it in the first test.

Japan (Daichi Kurogawa 19th) drew with India (V R Raghunath 44th) 1-1.
