  Odisha karatekas bag 4 medals in Commonwealth meet

An eight-member Odisha squad achieved notable success in the 8th Commonwealth Karate Championship, bagging one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the first two days at Talkatora Indoor Stadium in Delhi.

Abhishek Pattnaik won the gold in under-21 boys` kata, while Payal Baral grabbed the silver in junior girls above 59kg fight on Saturday. Swagatika Sahoo and Udit Udam secured the two bronze medals yesterday.

Swagatika finished third in 12-13 year girls` 42kg fight, while Udit did the same in cadet boys` below 57kg fight.

 

However, the state top woman karateka Valena Valentina failed to live up to her reputation as she crashed out losing to an opponent from Australia. Saranya Ray, another girl from Odisha, lost to her Sri Lanka opponent in the second round of 12-13 years 42kg individual kata.

Anupama Swain finished fifth in women 55kg fight category, while Nihar Ranjan Swain lost in the second round of under-21 boys group. Odisha State Karate-do Association secretary Hari Prasad Pattanayak congratulated the squad for its outstanding success.
