23 Sep 2015 BHUBANESWAR

Odisha State Karate-do Association (OSKA) today showed a nice gesture by providing cash incentives and gifts to the eight-member state squad that bagged one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the 8th Commonwealth Karate Championship, held last week at Talkatora Indoor Stadium in Delhi.

In a felicitation function held here at Utkal Karate School, Abshek Patnaik received Rs 10,000 for winning gold in under-21 boys kata, while Payal Baral was given Rs 7,500 for securing silver in junior girls above 59kg fight. Bronze medallists Swagatika Sahoo and Udit Udam became richer by Rs 5,000 each.

Valena Valentina, Anupama Swain, Nihar Ranjan Swain and Saranya Ray, the other four members of the squad, received Rs 2,500 each. Woman international Valentina, who lost in the first round, was conspicuous by her absence.

Local MLAs Priyadarshi Mishra and Bijay Kumar Mohanty handed over the cash incentives in the presence of OSKA secretary Hari Prasad Pattanayak and other office-bearers of the state body. Pattanayak described the Commonwealth medals as the biggest success for karatekas of the state.
