  Rugby double crown for Odisha in National School Games

Odisha bagged a glorious double by winning gold medals in both boys and girls rugby event of the National School Games, which was held under the aegis of School Games Federation of India (SGFI) at Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh from Dec 2 to 5.

In the boys’ final Odisha beat Maharashtra 26-5. For Odisha, Ratnakar Hemram made two tries, followed by Sasanka Sekhar Tripathy and Sarbeswar Murmu with one each, while Ajit Kumar Hansdah effected three convertions.

Earlier in the semifinals, Odisha blanked Bihar 21-0, while Maharashtra drubbed Delhi 17-0. Odisha boys reached semifinals, winning both of their league matches. They trounced Assam 38-0 and Maharashtra 14-10.

 

In the girls’ gold medal match, Odisha blasted out Bihar 14-0. For the winners, Elizabeth Pradhan and Rajani Sabara registered one try each, while Sumitra Nayak made two convertions. Earlier in the semifinals, Odisha crushed Chhattisgarh 47-0, while Bihar prevailed over Maharashtra 12-0. On their way to the semifinals, Odisha girls won all three of their group league matches, outplaying Gujarat 46-0, CBSEWSO 50-0 and Chhattisgarh 33-7.

Six boys and seven girls of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) represented Odisha rugby teams in National School Games. They were: Kalicharan Biswal, Lalatedu Bidyadhar Naik, Sarbeswar Murmu, Ajit Hansdah, Suguda Majhi, Rajkishore Patra (all boys) and Manjulata Pradhan, Rajani Sabar, Soni Madangi, Sumitra Nayak, Lija Sardar, Manika Majhi, Elizabeth Pradhan (all girls). Subhakanta Mallia of KISS and Lipika Mohapatra of KIIT were the coaches of the boys and girls teams respectively.
