  Odisha Students Club lift Limka Memorial basketball trophy

Cuttack-based Odisha Students Club (OSC) emerged champions in the 2nd Syed Waqar Yunus (Limka) Memorial Basketball Tournament, defeating local favourites KIIT University 95-81 in the high-scoring final here at Unit-I Basketball Complex today.

Junior National player Saheed Khan played instrumental role in the title triumph for OSC, scoring 37 points in the final match. He was rewarded with the player of the tournament trophy. Abhishek Das of KIIT University received the trophy as the most promising player of the tournament.

Runners-up KIIT boys appeared a bit tired in the final after winning the grueling semifinal against Kishore Club 90-87 in extra time. In the other semifinal, OSC registered a 68-37 convincing win over Kalinga Warriors. Subham Samal with 36 points was the top scorer for KIIT in the final. Debutants Kishore Club finished second runners-up, defeating Kalinga Warriors 70-67 in the match for the third and fourth positions.

 

Bhubaneswar Central MLA Bijay Kumar Mohanty handed over the winners’ trophy in the closing ceremony. Title sponsors Serajudding Group’s director Meraj Yusha, former state woman basketball player Usha Patnaik, former State Assistant Sports Director Ashok Kumar Mohanty, Bhubaneswar Basketball Association (BBA) president Maqbul Ali and Khurda District Basketball Association (KDBA) secretary Prasanta Nayak were present on the occasion.

Organised jointly by BBA and KDBA, the five-day tournament featured a total of 12 teams from Twin City Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. On the occasion, city basketball fraternity paid humble tribute to former basketball player Syed Waqar Yunus, who was fondly known as Limka. Despite being 70 years old, Limka’s mother Farida Yunus showed a fine gesture by coming to the venue and encouring the players. The tournament received major boost as Serajuddin Mining Group came forward to fully sponsor the event, providing pleasant surprise and relief to the organisers.
